Alan Johnson Scores 3rd Win; Pavlick Wins & Clinches Crate Title

DUNDEE, NY – For Immediate Release – August 24th, 2015 – Curtis Berleue Photo –

Alan Johnson benefited from Derrick Podsiadlo’s misfortune on Friday night, taking the lead when the #21 launched a motor, to cruise away to win No. 3 of 2015.

Johnson and Podsiadlo put on a great show for the fans in attendance Friday night as the Penn Yan Express Stop #21 for Podsiadlo led early and looked to have a stout piece.  Johnson’s Friendly Ford No. 14J took advantage of the outside lane on a restart to power to the lead.

But the next restart saw Johnson choose the bottom lane, giving ‘D-Pods’ the top lane.  Podsiadlo used the top side to perfection reclaiming the lead until the engine expired down the backstretch.  Yet another great run early, ending in disappointment for the Penn Yan, NY driver who can’t buy a break in 2015.

Johnson dominated the rest of the way to claim his third win of the season.  Tyler Siri had a good run in the Superior Crushing 5* ride to come home as the runner-up.  Steve Paine recovered nicely from a flat tire on lap 11, then having some timely caution flags to help ‘The Hurricane’ advance to the third spot.  Last week’s winner Cory Costa was fourth and Dundee, NY’s Brady Fultz rounded out the top five.

Casey Pavlick used the cushion early and then late in the 25-lap Crate Sportsman feature to take his fourth win of 2015.  In doing so, he also left Black Rock Friday with a 62-point advantage that clinched the track championship for the Pavlick team.

Last Friday, Pavlick took the lead from Stacey Jackson with two laps to go using the cushion to victory.  This week it was the same story, different leader with three laps remaining in the feature.  Pavlick took the lead from Dale Welty on the outside of turns 3 and 4 enroute to Champion Power Equipment Victory Lane for the second week in a row.

Pavlick entered this season wanting to win more races and travel with the Grit Racing Series more.  They have done so, recently qualifying for and running well in an event at Utica-Rome Speedway.  Pavlick also claimed a victory earlier this season at Skyline in the ’40 For The Fallen’ event.

Welty came home second, Jackson third, Jordan Siri fourth and Brett Buono rounded out the top five finishers.

Keith Lamphere continued his dominance of the M&M Auto Sales IMCA Modifieds, with his sixth points-paying win of 2015.  Lamphere used both the high lane and the bottom hub to his liking, just one week after losing his brakes and registering an uncharacteristic DNF.

Brad Smith and Scott Sebring had wicked fast cars early in the event, but as the laps wound down Lamphere and Jason Benjamin were charging hard toward the front.  Benjamin has been trying desperately to close the gap in the points battle, as he only trailed Lamphere by 11 heading into Friday night’s action.  The win and Benjamin’s second place effort will now make the lead 12.

Smith came home with a fine third place run in the No. 76, Sebring fourth and Mark Griffin the top five.

It took nearly the entire season, but CJ Guererri finally got the monkey off his back on Friday night, winning in the Morseman Racing Chassis Street Stock division.  Guererri led early and often, making the No. CJ1 as wide as he needed to in order to keep the lead from challengers like Gene Balmer, Chuck Winslow and Kurt Stebbins.

Not only did the win get the monkey off his back for the season, he also knocked two-thirds of Jared Hill’s points lead off the board.  Guererri trailed Hill by 25 points going into Friday night’s event.  With Hill blowing an engine before halfway and Guererri getting the win, the lead for Hill is now only 8 points with two point shows remaining.

Guererri and a sea of red shirts celebrated in Super Gen Products Victory Lane.  Balmer came home as the runner-up, Stebbins was third, Winslow fourth and Frank Chapman Jr rounded out the top five.

The NAPA Know How 4 Cylinders saw a thrilling battle for the win late in the race between Jayson Smart and Rich Sharpsteen.  Smart drove around Sharpsteen to take over the lead with less than five laps to go and went on to his second victory of 2015.

After the race there was some controversy in post-race tech inspection involving the Smart No. 8 car.  As of Friday night the winner has been disqualified and has lost points and money for the night.  Black Rock Speedway’s website and social media pages will have any further developments on the post-race infraction.

Sharpsteen was awarded first place points over Joe Povoski, Chad Ayers, Jeremy Trank and 2014 track champion Scott Bradley.  Sharpsteen clinched the track championship last week and will focus now on just winning races the rest of the way home.  Several cars still have a shot at a top five points finish with just two regular season races remaining.

Jeff Daugherty clinched the Creekside Entertainment Bandits track championship last week but came out Friday night to prove his supremacy in the division once again.  Daugherty had the lead by the time the field cleared Turn 2 and rolled on to his 14th victory of 2015.

Billy Bowers from Dundee had a solid run in his No. 14 for second place.  ShiAnn Labar continues to find speed in her No. 42 ride, coming home with a podium finish Friday night.  Brandon Kinner, Polly Dean, Dakota Evans and Pixie Kinner completed the seven-car field.

Coming up this week will be a weekly racing program featuring all six divisions at Black Rock Speedway PLUS the return of Spectator Races.  Any street legal vehicle can compete, drivers are required to wear helmets and purchase a pit pass to enter in either the car division or SUV/Van/Truck divisions.  The Modifieds, Crate Sportsman, M&M Auto Sales IMCA Modifieds, MRC Street Stocks, NAPA Know How 4 Cylinders and Creekside Entertainment Bandits will all be on the racing card.

Pit gates open at 4PM, Grandstands at 5PM, Hot Laps at 6:15PM and Racing taking the first green flag promptly at 7PM.  General admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and ages 12-17 with children under 12 always FREE at Black Rock Speedway.
