ALEX PAYNE WINS CAL LANE MEMORIAL FALL NATIONALS AT OUTLAW SPEEDWAY

Jordan Thomas claims ESS 360 Sprint A Main, Brent Ayers bags first of season in Crate Sportsman, Glenn Whritenour makes it eleven wins claiming Street Stock feature.  Jerry Lobdell in Hobby Stocks and Willy Easling makes it three wins picking up Mini Stock feature.

Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.

(Dundee, NY) For the second consecutive week, the Tyler Siri owned Outlaw Speedway played host to a post season special event with the 10th Annual running of the Cal Lane Memorial Fall Nationals and with picture perfect weather the pit area swelled with many of the top names in racing.

Alex Payne picked up a ride for the three remaining September and October Specials at the popular Yates County Oval driving one of Tim Gibsons Sunrise Insulation machines as a team mate to Doctor Danny Johnson and he has taken full advantage of the opportunity last week finishing third after coming from deep in the field.

On this night in the Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Modifieds Payne’s fortunes in qualifying was much better as he picked-up his heat event and began the thirty- lap feature in position eight one spot ahead of Matt Sheppard who was victorious in last year’s Cal Lane Memorial.

Doctor Danny Johnson by virtue of the re-draw along with Justin Wright would bring the twenty-five-car field to the opening green with Johnson getting the jump and setting a torrid pace in the early going with Wright and third place starter, Tyler Siri giving chase.

The first caution flag would wave on lap ten for the disabled machine of Ron Cartwright Jr. who came to a stop in turn four.

On the restart, Johnson continued to lead, however he was now feeling pressure from the second and third place running machines of Wright and Siri.

The second caution flag would fly on lap fourteen for the Pat Ward machine who was off the pace, and it was during that yellow flag slow down that Danny Johnson would head pit side for a flat right rear tire giving up the lead for the second consecutive week due to a flat tire.

On the restart Wright would lead but it was short lived as Matt Sheppard had worked his way into second after getting by Siri and from there, he would pass Wright and assume command and looked posed to pick up the win along with the $5,010 paycheck.

However, Alex Payne had other ideas as he was now up to second and rapidly closing on Sheppard for the race lead and it was on lap twenty-five that he made his move around the outside of Sheppard as the pair were in lap traffic.

For the next pair of circuits Payne would lead with a couple car lengths over Sheppard as the third and final caution flag would fly on lap twenty-seven for the slowed machine of Phil Vigneri III.

Once back to green and in clean air it came down to a three lap, two car slug fest between two of the best in the business and with the crowd on their feet Alex Payne was able to keep a safe two to three car advantage between himself and Sheppard as he would go on the his fourth feature win at Outlaw Speedway in 2025.

A jubilant Alex Payne was greeted in victory lane to the thunderous cheers of the capacity crowd as he had upended the top Modified driver of this era.

Chasing Payne and Sheppard across the line was Justin Wright who raced within the lead pack throughout the entire distance with Tommy Collins advancing from seventh spot to claim fourth.

Tyler Siri capped off a great drive by completing the top five finishers after running in the top three throughout most of the thirty-lap affair.

The Empire Super Sprints brought a solid field of seventeen 360 powered machines to Outlaw Speedway all looking for the $4,000 payday.

Jordan Thomas who has been having a spectacular 2025 season in both 360 and 410 Sprint Car action would lead the charge off the opening green as he quickly disposed of pole position starter and 305 Sprint Car specialist, Jordan Hutton.

Early in the going a melee occurred going down the back straight away with Jonathan Preston losing part of his top wing and ending his night, but once back to action it was still Thomas setting the pace with Jordan Poirier and Hutton giving chase.

Thomas and Poirier would swap the top spot for several laps and with fifteen laps into the books it was still Thomas, Poirier and Hutton showing as the top three with Davie Franek rapidly closing in on the lead trio after starting in position eight.

The final caution would wave one lap later for Hutton as the Hannibal, NY speedster jumped the cushion in turn two and on the restart, Franek was able to get by Poirier and set sail for Thomas.

With the laps winding down and Thomas in clean air Franek was closing fast but ran out of time as the double checkered flags waved with Thomas, Franek and Poirier completing the podium.

Fourth went to Dylan Swiernik with Dalton Rombough rounding out the top five.

For a more concise wrap up of all the ESS activity including heat winners and post-race contingencies Empire Super Sprint Public Relations guru, Curtis Berlue has it all for you at www.empiresupersprints.com.

In Knapp and Schlappi Lumber Crate Sportsman action thirty-one machines checked in for the night of competition requiring four qualifying heat races and a consolation to set the twenty-four car starting line-up and on the front row it was a well-seasoned veteran in Dale Welty along with a true rookie, Collin Wyant leading the field to the opening green flag.

One of the favorites going into the twenty-lap feature was two-time 2025 feature winner, Donnie Lawson of Addison, however his night would end early on lap nine ending any chance of picking up the Cal Lane Memorial Fall Nationals win.

Brent Ayers of Dundee has struggled at times in 2025 and entered the event looking for his first trip to victory lane and it would come on this night as he moved from outside row four starting spot, pass last weeks feature winner, Chris Darling and go on to the victory and the $2068 pay day.

Darling who hails from Manchester took full advantage of his fifth starting position to move into the runner-up spot and chase Ayers across the stripe.

Welty would drift from his pole position to round the podium.

Devon Green finished right where he started in fourth while two-time 2025 feature winner, Blake Parsons advanced four positions from ninth to complete the top five.

A slim ten car Swarthout Recycling Street Stock field found Carl Cleveland and Glenn Whritenour leading the field to the opening green and like he had done ten times previously in 2025, Jasper’s Glenn Whritenour controlled the action in route to win eleven on the year.

Joe Giardina of Beaver Dams continues his consistent top five performance of late coming home in the runner-up spot after starting third on the opening grid.

Willy Easling drove from sixth to complete the top three.

2024 Street Stock Champion, Gene Sharpsteen came home fourth with Ely Mangiarelli of Canandaigua rounding the top five.

The Cal Lane Memorial Fall Nationals win for Whritenour was worth$1,568.

Sixteen of the Mighty 4 Cylinder Mini Stocks took the opening green for their twenty-lap feature with 2025 feature winner’s Craig DeCamp and Jayson Smart leading the charge into turn one.

With the class heavy weights out in front Willy Easling, who was doing double duty on the night, was quickly working his way to the front from his row two starting position and once out in front would cruise to his third Winner’s Circle Deli 4 Cylinder Mini Stock feature of the season running a limited schedule.

Woodhull Raceway Street Stock regular, Tedd Morseman was in his potent Mini Stock for the night and drove from sixth to nail the runner-up spot with Jayson Smart drifting one spot to finish third.

Like Smart, DeCamp also lost a few positions to finish fourth with Campbell’s Mike Stone completing the top five.

For his efforts Easling pocketed a hefty $1,010.

The final feature of the night was the Addison, Corning, Hornell, Wellsville Hobby Stock with the largest field of the season turning out with all drivers looking for the $1,010 payday.

Thunder Mountain standout driver, Jerry Lobdell was able to best the twenty-six-car feature in route to victory as he was chased across the line by another invader in Lanson Albanese who finished second.

Street Stock standout and Corning native, Brett Crawford jumped into a Hobby Stock for the night and wound up being the highest finishing Outlaw Speedway regular in claiming third.

Another pair of invaders in Josh Towner and Cole Burgess would go on to round the top five in what is anticipated to be a tune-up for the upcoming Hoag Memorial Weekend on Friday and Saturday, October 17-18, 2025,

Congratulations to all competitors!

Outlaw Speedway will now take a break for the next three consecutive weeks prior to re-opening for the 2025 season ending Hoag Memorial, October 17-18.

More information regarding classes of competition, purse structures, as well as Live Streaming on The Cushion will be forthcoming in both press release form as well as updates at www.Facebook.com/OutlawSpeedwayLLC/.

The 2024 version of the Hoag Memorial which commemorates the lives of both Dutch and Dean Hoag saw a massive turnout of drivers and equipment for both nights of action with some three hundred machines seeing competition in six divisions.

2025 promises to be even better as the CRSA 305 Sprints have been added to the card joining the Empire Super Sprints, Modifieds, Sportsman, Street and Hobby Stocks as well as the Mini Stocks.

The entire Hoag Memorial Weekend is proudly sponsored by Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Ram of Penn Yan.
