Triple Shot! Dgien Boys Sweep Modified/Sportsman Divisions At Black Rock Speedway
DUNDEE, NY – For Immediate Release – July 4th, 2015 –
Joe Dgien and Jake Dgien have both been dangerously close to snagging victories on the ‘Fast Four-Tenths-Mile’ in 2015. On Friday night though, the dirt modified racing cousins decided to grace Champion Power Equipment Victory Lane in front of a standing-room-only crowd.
Joe Dgien started the night’s Modified action off with a victory in the make up feature, held over from the June 5th program that was rained out. On this night, Dgien would find the outside lane and use it to perfection to hold off 7-time Black Rock Speedway Modified track champion ‘The Hurricane’ Steve Paine and dirt modified legend Alan Johnson.
The Cameron Mills, NY driver on several occasions so far this season, has been competitive in search of his first career Black Rock Speedway win. On this night however, he would break through to score that win over Paine, Johnson, Ron Cartwright Jr and Donnie Lawson returning to Black Rock for a top five.
In the nightcap for the Modifieds, Dgien would again be victorious but this time it was a much taller task to get the victory. The field would be paced early by a fast running Tyler Siri who was in need of a good run after recent struggles at ‘The Rock’ and Rolling Wheels Wednesday night.
Paine and Dgien found themselves chasing down Siri as the topside of the speedway began to come in late in the 30-lap feature. Dgien wasn’t bashful about running the cushion and would blast by Paine and Siri to take the lead with less than ten laps to go.
The driver of the Joe Dgien Trucking #3x was able to keep the car nice and straight in the corners, which allowed him to keep a fair distance back to Paine. Paine would try and pull out whatever tricks he had left in his Elmira Heat Treating HigFab #7x but was to no avail. Dgien made it a clean sweep over Paine, Siri, Cory Costa and Johnson the top five.
In the Crate Sportsman division it was the Avoca, NY pilot Jake Dgien who completed the Dgien Triple Shot Friday night. One week after a wreck that gave the 3x ride a poor finish in the make up feature and a DNS in the regularly scheduled feature, the cousin to Modified driver Joe Dgien put one on the board for his first career Black Rock Speedway feature win.
Dgien would get the win but had to hold off four of the best in the business when it comes to Crate Sportsman Modified racing. Loren Lincoln has come on strong as we have approached Friday night’s Mid-Season Championship and would come home as the runner-up to Dgien.
Russell Morseman in his K&N Filters #44 MRC chassis came home third in his best finish of 2015 at ‘The Rock’. Steve Gray, coming off a sweep of his own the week before, would bring the Proctor Enterprises #29g in fourth. Point leader Casey Pavlick continues to reel in solid finishes to complete the top five.
In the Morseman Racing Chassis Street Stocks it was another new face in Victory Lane for 2015. 2014 Empire 100 winner Kurt Stebbins punched his ticket after winning the 20-lap feature go.
Stebbins has had a strong piece all season long but has had his issues with the inevitable ‘racing deals’ and mechanical failures that come along during a season. Amazingly, even after not starting two features so far in 2015, Stebbins sat tied for 10th place in points going into Mid-Season Championships.
Stebbins will certainly gain ground on the top five in points with the victory. Defending Black Rock Speedway Street Stock champion Jeremy Potrzebowski finished second. Gene Balmer continues his strong performances since returning from a bad flip to finish third. Dennis Cummings continues to improve every week and this week brought home a fourth place finish. LaVerne Knickerbocker brought the Costa’s Auto Body #187 home with a top five.
One week after a poor finish, Jason Benjamin took home his third victory of the season in the M&M Auto Sales & Service IMCA Modifieds. While Benjamin will make up ground on point leader Keith Lamphere, another great story from Friday’s feature was the fantastic run for Nicole Spalding.
The Troy, PA pilot drove to her best Black Rock Speedway finish of 2015 with a fine second place finish. This lady racer has made vast improvements since first taking laps around the ‘Fast Four-Tenths-Mile’ oval last season.
Logan Terry continues to knock on the door for his first Black Rock win of 2015 to finish third. Tony Harris continues to do the same as well in the red 9cat to finish fourth. Ken Buck racked up another top five finish in his #30.
2001 NAPA Know How 4 Cylinder track champion Joe Povoski picked up his first win of 2015 on Friday night- continuing his fill-in role in the #4 owned by Rick Horton. Horton suffered a concussion in an on-track crash a couple weeks ago and will be out of the car likely for the rest of 2015. Horton didn’t have to go far to find a suitable replacement as both Horton and Povoski reside in Bradford.
Rich Sharpsteen extended his points lead finishing second while Jeremy Trank and the Backyard Motorsports crew repaired his #15k to come home in the second runner-up position. Wes Houghtaling in a rare Black Rock start finished fourth while Erica Bell rounded out the top five finishers.
In the June 5th rained out make up feature, James Kreidler continued his dominance in the division, albeit on a part-time basis. Kreidler has started six feature events in his #79k and has picked up checkered flags in four of them. Rich Sharpsteen avoided danger and posted another runner-up finish to further increase his already building point lead.
Jeremy Trank proved that his car is back to normal with two third place finishes on the night which will help him make up the points he lost on June 26th. Defending NAPA Know How 4 Cylinder track champion Scott Bradley finished fourth while Jayson Smart in the Speedway Performance #8 rounded out the top five.
In the Creekside Entertainment Bandit division it was Jeff Daugherty extending his point lead by taking victory number eight in 2015. Daugherty got the win over division rival Billy Bowers who came home second. ShiAnn Labar tied her best run of the season for third, Pixie Kinner finished fourth and Brandon Kinner filled out the top five positions.
Black Rock Bites:
*A jam packed grandstand took in the racing action Friday night with a $10,000 Fireworks Show put on by Young Explosives- sponsored by D.B. Miles Insurance Agency located in Dundee.
*Joe Povoski won the regularly scheduled feature in the 4 Cylinder division. However for the June 5th make up there was an oversight by track management as Rick Horton had qualified the 4 car to race in the make up feature. A compromise was met to allow Povoski to maintain last place points and pay after the mistake was caught during the make up feature.
*4 new drivers found themselves in Champion Power Equipment Victory Lane after racing on a much smoother racing surface. Although the surface provided some dust, a fair compromise was attempted with the surface until speedway officials can add new clay in the future.
*Speedway management appreciates everyone who attended the event Friday night whether your focus was the racing action or the awesome Fireworks display.
Coming up at 'The Rock':
Next week on the ‘Fast Four-Tenths-Mile’ Black Rock Speedway will be a weekly racing program consisting of Modifieds, Crate Sportsman, IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, 4 Cylinders and Bandits. The racing action will be presented by Joe Dgien Trucking, just one week after their best night to date in Dundee! Pits open at 4PM, Grandstands at 5PM with the first green flag waving promptly at 7PM.
