PHELPS, RUGGLES, POTRZEBOWSKI, AND KREIDLER PICK UP WINS

DUNDEE, NY……Friday night the Yates County Speedway played host to the first annual “Seneca Lake Shootout” presented by Suburban Propane and Blue Heron Construction. A great field of Modifieds were joined by the 305 Sprint Cars, Street Stocks, and 4 Cylinders. Baldwinsville’s Jimmy Phelps prevailed in the Modified 50 lap event, pocketin $4,000 for his efforts. Darryl Ruggles continued his successful season as he picked up the big 305 Sprint Car feature win. Jeremy Potrzebowski was the winner of the Street Stock feature, while James Kreidler was victorious in the 4 Cylinder event.

Alan Johnson and Justin Wright brought the Modified field to the green flag for the 50 lap Seneca Lake Shootout. Johnson immediately grabbed the top spot with Wright falling into second. Sportsman campaigner and Yates County regular Brady Fultz quickly moved up from sixth in the starting grid to take over third in just two laps.

Meanwhile, fan favorite Steve Paine quickly started working through traffic moving into a top five spot in the opening 5 circuits. Johnson continued to set the pace, with heavy pressure coming from Fultz. Following numerous attempts on the bottom of the speedway, Fultz then got by to grab the lead from Johnson on lap 11.

As Fultz powered out in front, Johnson remained within striking distance holding onto second. Matt Sheppard was on the move as well after cracking into the top 5, then passing Paine soon after for third. Jimmy Phelps was a man on the move as well. Phelps, who started tenth by virtue of the redraw, began to pick it up, as he was a contender in the top 5 by lap 15.

Out in front, Johnson was able to get back by Fultz to reclaim the lead, as he began to open up a comfortable advantage.  By lap 25, the battle was shaping up for second through fifth with Fultz, Sheppard, Paine, and Phelps all chasing Johnson. At the same time, Billy VanPelt found some speed on the top side as he moved into sixth from twentieth on the grid.

As the race continued, Phelps began to pressure Sheppard looking for third place. The pressure proved to be too much for Sheppard, as he would lose the spot on lap 33. After moving into third, Phelps quickly worked by Fultz with his sights then set on Johnson for the race lead.

By lap 37, the lead for Johnson was cut to just a car length, with Phelps applying heavy pressure behind him on the top of the speedway. Meanwhile behind the top 2, Sheppard found the outside groove to his liking as he worked by Fultz to reclaim the third spot.

Phelps finally got by to take the lead on lap 39, and quickly pulled away from the field. As Johnson lost the lead, he soon lost the second position to Sheppard who continued to run the high side of the speedway.

Fultz continued to slide backwards, while VanPelt worked by him to crack into the top 5 with just 5 to go. In the closing laps Phelps was able to keep the field at bay, holding on to pick up the $4,000 victory. Phelps was followed to the line by Sheppard, Johnson, VanPelt, with Vic Coffey completing the top 5.

Sixth through tenth went to Fultz, Paine, Derrick Podsiadlo, Tyler Siri and Chad Phelps. By virtue of the victory, Jimmy Phelps received a guaranteed starting spot for the “Southern Tier 100” at the Five Mile Point Speedway on Saturday, November 1st.

The Street Stock feature proved to be another thrilling event with Jeremy Potrzebowski picking up the $600 payday. Nate Daggett jumped out to the early advantage as he led the opening 8 laps. Dylan Ceece then worked by on lap 9 to claim the lead from Daggett.

Gene Balmer quickly passed Daggett to take over second. By lap 17, Ceece held the lead over, Balmer, with Potrzebowski right behind in third. With two laps to go, Ceece had a right rear tire going down, which allowed the second and third place runners to close in on him. On the last lap, Ceece could hang on no longer, as Potrzebowski passed him for the win. Daggett got by for second, Ceece held on for third, Jared Hill fourth, and Rich Sharpsteen completed the top 5.

With the win, Potrzebowski also picked up a guaranteed starting spot for the Empire 100 on October 25th at Yates County. Daggett received a guaranteed starting spot for the RoC Street Stock championship race on November 1st at Five Mile Point Speedway.

A great field of 305 Sprint Cars were on hand for their big 20 lap feature. Track champion Darryl Ruggles proved to be the car to beat, picking up top honors. Will Glover jumped out to the early advantage, however it did not last long, as Ruggles took the lead for good on lap 3.

Ruggles picked up the win, while Todd Henderson, Will Glover, Nick Cooper, and Doug Crews completed the top 5.

In the 4 Cylinder feature, Street Stock regular James Kreidler made a last lap pass to pick up the victory. Track champion Scott Bradley had the lead on the white flag lap, however jumped the cushion on the final circuit allowing Kreidler to get by for the win. Jayson Smart, Donnie Clemons and David Whethim rounded out the top five at the stripe.
