CAL LANE MEMORIAL SPRING NATIONALS TO HONOR ONE OF DUNDEE’S ALL- TIME GREATS

Outlaw Speedway to hold the two day event on April 12 and 13, 2024 sponsored by Lucas Oil.

American Racer Tire 44/48 Tire Rule kicks in for all Modified and Sportsman events in April 2024.

Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.

(Dundee, NY) For well over three decades, Cal Lane was a main stay at the Yates County New York dirt oval now known as the Outlaw Speedway.

Nicknamed “Swivel,” Cal Lane was not only the guy to beat in the 1960’s, 70’s and early 1980’s, but he was also one of the most beloved drivers to ever compete at the popular Dundee speed plant.

After his retirement, Cal Lane could be found racing flat track dirt bikes with his son all over the country.  He then went on to focus his attention on the family-owned business, Lane’s Yamaha of Watkins Glen which he founded with his brother Malcolm.

In his later years Lane became a memorabilia fanatic dealing in all types of racing collectables.

According to Outlaw Speedway owner/promoter, Tyler Siri, “Cal was one heck of a guy, and everybody loved him.  He and his family at Lane’s Yamaha have been huge supporters of this track for half a century.  It was their home, and it is with a great deal of pleasure that we can celebrate his memory with the 2nd Annual Cal Lane Memorial.”

Last year’s inaugural running of the Cal Lane Memorial Spring Nationals in early April was nixed due to inclement weather, however it was made-up as part of the Fall Nationals in September with a packed house and a star-studded field jammed into the pit area.

This year’s event is set for Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13 with Friday nights activities consisting of practice and front row Dash Qualifying for Saturday night’s finale.

The 2nd Annual Cal Lane Memorial will see the 360 Empire Super Sprints taking to the Fast 4/10 of a Mile Clay Oval for their first appearance of the season with the winner taking home $4220 as will the victor in the Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Ram Modified Division.

The Sunrise Insulation/Knapp and Schlappi Lumber 602 Sportsman will see the first car across the line claiming $2,200.

Swarthout Recycling sponsored Street Stocks feature winner wins $1720 and the driver that takes the checkered flag in the Addison and Dunning NAPA Auto Parts Stores Hobby Stock Division walks away with a $1220 pay day.

Rounding out the card for the Cal Lane Spring Nationals will be the first ever appearance for the SCDRA Front Wheel Driven 4 Cylinders where the winners take home pay is $2,500.  This event is for Front Wheel Drive’s Only!

“This is a huge event for all the classes that are a part of the 9th Annual Spring Nationals.  I have pumped a lot of money into the purses for this event and I am confident that we will see a huge turnout of drivers and fans for this one.”  That once again according to Siri.

Saturday, April 13 will find qualifying heat, consolation and feature events for all classes.

It is anticipated that back gate times for both nights will be at 5:00 pm with grandstand seating to open at 5:30. Hot laps will be at 7:00 with the first green flying at 7:30 pm.

Fans and drivers are encouraged to keep a watchful eye on Facebook. Should impending weather or cold temperatures become an issue, times may be adjusted accordingly.

All concession stands will be open both nights along with the Outlaw Saloon which is pit side as well as the Turn 4 Tavern offering ice cold beer for those of legal age.

2024 Official Outlaw Speedway Apparel will be available at both the pit and grandstand seating areas.

Fans are encouraged to wear anything yellow which was Cal Lanes predominate color and 220 was the car number he proudly displayed throughout most of his illustrious career.

Lucas Oil will return to sponsor the Cal Lane Memorial Spring Nationals after losing the season opening event which was originally scheduled for a week prior on April 5 and 6.

Daily updates for the 9th Annual Cal Lane Memorial Spring Nationals will be posted at www.Facebook.com/OutlawSpeedway/.

It is also noted all Modified and 602 Sportsman Division events staged in the month of April will require all competitors in both divisions to run American Racer Tire compounds of a 44 Left Rear and 48 Right Rear or harder for all April events.  For the first three weeks in May drivers can go back to any American Racer Tire compound, but after that it will be 44/48 or harder for the remainder of the 2024 season.  This includes all heat, consolation and feature events.
