GARY MONTGOMERY MEMORIAL SET FOR OUTLAW SPEEDWAY ON FRIDAY, MAY 28, 2021
Pace Performance/Sweeney Chevrolet RUSH Late Model Touring Series to headline an aggressive night of race action.
Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.
(Dundee, NY) Gary Montgomery was a huge fixture in northeast racing circles. His involvement began as a broadcaster at local short tracks across New York and from there he became heavily involved in Glen Donnelly’s DIRT Motorsports Organization in numerous capacities. He even did a stint as a pit reporter for the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and it was not uncommon to hear his voice on the national airways at any given NASCAR event. From there he went onto promote his own race series known then as the BRP Can Am Series for 360 Late Models where many full fender standouts now compete in the RUSH Crate Late Model Series. In short, Gary Montgomery was a giant in the industry and his death several years ago after a valiant battle with cancer has left a huge void in Motorsports. It is in his memory that Outlaw Speedway will again host the Gary Montgomery Memorial at the track on Friday, May 28, 2021.
“Gary was such a huge part of this business, stated Outlaw Speedway Owner/Promoter, Tyler Siri. He did it all as a broadcaster, promoter and track manager. His ties to this region run deep especially at Outlaw where he once managed the facility for then owners Lin and Cindy Hough when the track was called Black Rock Speedway. Gary did a fabulous job with the BRP Can AM Series as many of the guys that were loyal to him now compete in the RUSH Late Model Series. It’s a perfect fit to have his name tied to a nightly special at the track involving the RUSH Late Model Series.”
The Vicki Emig promoted; Pace Performance Sweeney Chevrolet RUSH Late Model Series will converge at Outlaw Speedway for what promises to be a great night of race action. Drivers representing several states will make their way to the popular Yates County Speedway all looking to claim the Gary Montgomery Memorial Trophy and $2,000 first place check.
With its unique rules structure featuring all cars running spec engines, shocks and tires the RUSH Late Model’s put the emphasis on driver ability, chassis set up and race car affordability.
Former Outlaw Speedway Late Model Track Champions Chad Homan (2018) and Brian Pork Chop Knowles (2017) will lead the charge in an event that will see the likes of RUSH Series Champions Mr. Excitement, Jeremy Wonderling and John Waters. Other local standout Late Model drivers including 2016 Outlaw Late Model Champion, The Jet Jason Knowles, 2020 Outlaw Speedway IMCA Modified Track Champion, Bad Brad Smith along with JJ Mazur. Kurt Stebbins, Darin Horton and Steve LeBarron are also likely to see action.
The Gary Montgomery Memorial RUSH Late Model Special at Outlaw on Friday, May 28 will kick off three straight nights of racing for the popular touring group with Saturday’s event at Genesee. Bradford, Pa. on Sunday rounds out the trifecta of events.
