Donnie Lawson and Jeremy Wonderling Prevail at Black Rock

Donnie Lawson might have had competitors that were as strong as he was on Friday Night, but when things are going your way, things just seem to work out.

Lawson, continued his hot streak scoring his ninth win of the year in sportsman competition at Black Rock Speedway. On a night touted as “Christmas in July”, Lawson got a little bit of a gift when his biggest challenger got caught in lapped traffic.

The Woodhull, NY veteran took the lead on a lap 3 restart from Marcus Dinkins but had defending champion Todd Henderson closing in for the lead. As the two closed in on the lapped car of Mike DeMallie, it was clear that this could decide the race.

Just after half way though the feature, Henderson got collected with the No. 74 car he drove early in the year and spun his No. 18H. It would send the Canandaigua, NY driver to the back and give Lawson the break he needed to go on for the win.

Racing was wild early on in the sportsman division, with plenty of three-wide action. Marcus Dinkins paced the field from the drop of the green flag and would settle for second. Craig Gardner, Brady Fultz and Henderson came back up to round out the top-five.

With a strong field of late models in the pits, Dave DuBois and Jeremy Wonderling, the two most recent BRS LM Championship proved their mettle, as they were the class of the field and decided the race between themselves.

DuBois took the lead on lap three, but Wonderling began to close and after three laps of running side by side for the top spot, coming to the cross flags, Wonderling took the lead. It looked like the No. 3J would run away, but DuBois started to reel him in by using the top of the track. The 012 would come up just short though, as Wonderling scored his second win of the year.

Behind the top two were early leader John Waters, Mike Wonderling and J.J. Mazur.

The street stock feature saw a wild finish after a rough start. Early cautions took out multiple cars but by the time laps were able to click away, it was an epic three-car scramble out front.

Josh Parker, who was borrowing his father George’s car for the feature, lead the first 18 laps, but would hand the lead over to Frank Guererri Jr. coming to white flag. Those two, along with Nate Peckham, were effectively three-wide for the final two laps, with Guererri prevailing.

It was a big win for the No. 113, as he and his crew scrambled throughout the week just to make it to the speedway after wrecking the car hard at Canandaigua last weekend.

Parker would cross in second just ahead of Peckham. Local residents Jason White and Carl Cleveland completed the top-five.

With an even track out there for the 4-cylinders, it came down to being smooth to prevail, something that Terry Povoski is a leader at. Povoski took the lead from Rich Sharpsteen II just before half way and held him off on the top of the track.

Ray Speicher would cross in third with Dave Matwiejow and Brad Rathbun completed the top-five.

Timex Morgan commanded the added micro sprint race, taking the lead on the second circuit and driving away to pick up the win.

Erica Bell got back in to Victory Lane at BRS in the Ladies 4-Cylinder Feature. Even though Bell spun out of the lead on the second lap but took over command of the race from Val Stephens just after half way to hang on.

To start the night, Dylan Cecce made the “Flyin’ X” represent his 10th win of the year in roman numerals on Friday Night, as the youngster from Bath took the lead, lost it, then got it back with three to go to continue his dominance of the bandit division.

Josh Wallenbeck took the lead on lap four from Cecce but could not hang on, as the spots were swapped back towards the end. Behind the top two were Noah Herrington, Val Stephens and David DuBois.

Three firefigther and graduate enduros were also run on the night to make it a full program in front of a big crowd. Action continues next week with the Genesee/Black Rock Challenge. It is also $20 carload night. For more information, visit www.BlackRockSpeedway.com.
