Special Night at Black Rock Finds Lawson, DuBois, Fisher and Sharpsteen in Winner’s Circle
With extra money and additional laps helping to boost the action, a move back to Friday Night at Black Rock seemed to be just fine for some familiar faces to Victory Lane.
Eric Fisher made his return to the street stocks look seamless, as the modified regular dominated the $1,000-to-win feature.
Fisher, of Bluff Point, lead each of the eight laps of his heat race to earn a front row starting spot for the feature. “Coon Dog” jumped to the lead and was never to be challenged again.
A pair of yellow flags before half way set up a potential challenge, but Fisher was simply too strong. Jared Hill was also running well, however on lap 14 he and Mike Schultz came together, forcing them to the back.
Frank Guererri Jr. logged another solid finish in second while North County invader Dave Pope was third. Eric Fisher’s brother, Chris, was fourth and Gene Sharpsteen completed the top-five in a race that involved 31 cars.
Dave DuBois had felt a few months back the he could just not figure out how to make his car work at BRS. The Corfu resident had it figured out on Friday as he held off the always-tough Steve Dixon No. 50 for his second win of the year at his Friday Night home.
The No. 012 jumped into the lead in the $1,000-to-win 25-lap event on lap six from his Genesee County buddy Jim Johnson. Johnson would fight back though and after caution came out for debris, he would get around DuBois for the lead. It would not last, though, as another caution came out before a lap could be recorded.
DuBois took advantage of his second chance and would get back out in front, but Steve Dixon took the lead near the end as well. He got in to the lead with seven laps left but hand it back coming to five laps to go as DuBois would go on to pick up a cool “G”.
Johnson would fade to third while Greg Galligan and Glenn Whritenhour rounded out the top-five.
Donnie Lawson stayed on his 2009 hot streak, taking the lead from Loren Lincoln on the eighth lap and holding on for the $800 top prize.
Lawson, of Woodhull, had a close call on lap 22 when Bill McKelvey spun right in front of the No. 11. After dodging that bullet, it was smooth sailing for the sportsman point leader.
Rich Sharpsteen II kept things rolling along in the 4-cylinder feature, winning the bonus lap event in convincing fashion.
The prevailing groove for the division was the top and the local veteran was the best up there. The Povoski Brothers, Joe and Terry, made a number of challenges at “Fatboy”, but came up just shy and would have to settle for second and third, respectively.
Jon Wallenbeck and Ray Speicher, both from Beaver Dams, completed the top-five.
Dylan Cecce made it a sweep for the “Flyin’ X”, scoring yet another win early in the night in the bandit division. Cecce made a pass for the lead on Josh Wallenbeck coming to the white flag.
Chad Ayers held off Ethan Preston by running the bottom for his first 4-cylinder modified win at Black Rock.
Carl LeBarron earned the fourth place starting spot for the $10,000-to-win Enduro in November by virtue of his 30-lap victory Friday Night.
Val Stephens picked up her first career feature win, taking control on lap five and running away in the No. 57.
A.J. Smith of Andretti/Green Racing took the IRL Crewmember Enduro on the night.
Friday night action continues each weekend through Labor Day with a $5 Christmas in July Special. Adult general admission is just $5. A firefighter’s enduro plus a 600/270cc micro sprint race is also on the card. Racing starts at 6:45 p.m. For more information, visit www.BlackRockSpeedway.com.
