Five Repeat at Black Rock, Dale Welty wins again at Black Rock
Donnie Lawson kept his No. 11 headed in the right direction in the Hoselton Auto Mall Sportsman. He swept the heat and the feature for the second consecutive week to prove his dominance.
Lawson made a hard-fought pass on the inside of Brady Fultz on lap 14 of the 20-lap event and would check out in his LaBaron/Suzuki Teo.
Lawson started back in eighth for the feature and would ride in third before clearing Steve Gray for second on lap 7. He would then be aided by a lap 11 caution to bunch up behind Fultz. On the ensuing restart, Lawson would stay glued to the inside and forced Fultz to run the middle of the widened track. Fultz would finally slip up in turn four and Lawson had just enough room to clear.
Behind those top two, Todd Henderson was again solid for third. Gray and Chuck Winslow would complete the top-five.
Dale Welty was the only driver that won a feature on the night that did not win the season opener last week. Welty captured his first win in the Late Model Division since 2002, when they were then known as super stocks.
Welty, who now resides in Montour Falls, made a pass on Brady Wonderling for the lead on lap 3 and would then hold him off in a fierce battle to the checkered flag in a caution-free event.
“I wasn’t sure I would ever get back here,” noted Welty in Victory Lane. “This is win No. 69 for me here, the first 68 came a lot quicker but this one is pretty good.”
Welty was congratulated by his fellow racers that finished behind him, including second-place Brady Wonderling, his Brother Jeremy, who crossed in third, and Rich Karlnoski and Dave DuBois, who completed the top-five.
Frank Guererri Jr. won his second straight race in the street stocks, but he had to work for this one. Guererri and defending Champion Chris Fisher swapped the lead four times in the late stages of the event.
The two were making contact with one another on the final lap when a caution came out of Josh Parker. That set up a 1-lap dash to the finish, where Fisher made a bonsai move on the top of the track while Jared Hill dove to the inside. In the end though, Guererri would hold on for the win.
“I don’t know if I can keep doing this with Chris Fisher. Man, is he fast,” stated Guererri in Victory Lane. “He is making me sweat!”
Jared Hill made it interesting, crossing in third, ahead of Jim McAfee and Carl Cleveland, who completed the top-five.
Terry Povoski added to the list of drivers going back-to-back on the second week of the season, taking the lead on lap 11 from Dave Matwiejow and standing strong on two late restarts to pull off the win in his No. 4.
The first half of the race was hotly contested between five cars that swapped the spots each and every lap. Once Povoski made it out front though, things became much more stagnate.
Matwiejow was able to hold off Joe Povoski in a fierce battle for second. Rich Sharpsteen II and Del Cummings rounded out the top-five.
Dylan Cecce repeated in the Home Necessities Bandits Feature that kicked off the night. He took the lead on the second lap of the event from Brian Wilson and held off a Josh Wallenbeck on two late race restarts for the victory.
Brian Wilson survived some early problems to score in third with Lisa Cornish and Cody Clemens completing the top-five.
Jeremy Lagor and Daniel Scott were the winners of the respective Firefighter Enduro events held over the course of the night.
Two-time ASCS Patriot Champions Chuck Hebing and Bryan Howland were also on hand preparing for their season opening events next Friday at Black Rock. Tickets are just $13. For more information, visit www.BlackRockSpeedway.com.
