Lawson Back on Top of Record Sportsman Field at Black Rock
Donnie Lawson picked up where he left off last year, but the final few circuits were far from a Sunday Drive for the defending Hoselton Automall Sportsman track champion.
Lawson, from Woodhull, had to navigate through heavy lapped traffic in the closing laps to hold off Brady Fultz and score the win on first night of point’s races.
“I don’t run lapped traffic well. I don’t think that’s a secret,” admitted Lawson. “You just pick it as you can and hope the guy behind you screws up too.”
Lawson wasted no time inheriting the lead, as he weaved his way through the middle of a tight 3-wide battle for the top spot between Ross Vleck and Ron Cartwright Jr. After a caution on lap 2, he pulled back out ahead and looked to put his No. 11 in Victory Lane in the first point race for the second straight year.
A caution for debris with six laps to go allowed Lawson the opportunity to get out of lapped traffic, but Fultz wasn’t ready to quit.
Fultz ran down Lawson in the final three circuits and set up a drag race off turn four back to the line. Lawson drove from the top to the bottom and would secure the victory.
“The track was in great shape tonight,” stated Lawson. “Once you get out of the beginning of the spring and you get a few warm days, this track is always in great shape.”
Lawson didn’t just top any ordinary field on the night, a track record 24-car field for the unsanctioned sportsman division brought the bonus winner’s purse into effect, rewarding Lawson $600.
Also notable on the night occurred in the heats, when Mike Parmelee took his No. 14s for a wild ride in turn two. Parmelee slammed into the foam protecting the turn two wall and flipped his ride. Miraculously, he was able to start the feature.
Bryce Davis broke through with his first late model win at BRS last October, and continued his success in his No. 94, holding a solid line on the bottom to score the win in the Insinger/ Sunoco Race Fuels Late Model Feature.
Davis, of Canisteo, took the lead from the drop of the green flag and looked to be in comfortable position; but Jon Rivers, who had spun out in lap 2, charged up through the pack and seemed to have Davis set up for a pass, but over the final three circuits started to slip back and saw Davis run to the win.
Behind Davis and Rivers was Greg Galligan, who won his heat. Rich Karlnoski and JJ Mazur rounded out the top-five.
Chris Fisher got caught up in a jingle in his heat race and spun through the infield, but he didn’t quit and kept the race under green flag condition. Without the aid of a yellow flag, Fisher made his way back into fourth place, allowing him to get in the redraw for the feature and give him a chance at the win in the American Racer Street Stocks.
Starting in ninth, Fisher worked the bottom of the speedway until he got to leader Nate Peckham on lap five. Peckham opened up the door and allowed Fisher to inherit the lead. Fisher worked hard the final 15 laps to keep everyone at bay and scored the win.
Peckham would hold on for second as Jared Hill would challenge hard and capture third. Bob Buono came charging from the back to fourth with Jim McAfee a solid fifth.
For the second straight season, Terry Povoski elected to not run the lid lifter two weeks ago but came out for the first Signs Plus of Kanona 4-Cylinder Points race loaded for bear, winning his heat and commanding the lead in the feature for his second straight win to start a season.
Povoski pulled away from the pack in the opening 13 circuits, but when the first caution flag waved with just seven laps remaining, Rich Sharpsteen II through all he could at him before it was over.
Sharpsteen through multiple slidejobs at the No. 4, but when the “Flyin’ X” hit the turtle in turn three with four laps to go Povoski was able to scoot away to pick up the win.
Sharspteen would rally back for second as Del Cummings charged up to third. Ray Speicher was solid all race and would settle for fourth. Russ Wassner completed that tight pack in fifth.
The Home Necessities Bandits kicked off the night with seven racers that had never won in the division, and Noah took advantage of the opportunity and ran away from the field to score the popular win.
Herington roared past Val Stephens on the second lap to take the lead and set sail to win comfortably in the No. 7H. Zach Teed would move up to second, with Stephens crossing in third.
To cap off the night, the Ladies 4-cylinder feature took a wild turn of events with 3 laps to go when leaders Erica Bell and Paula Wallenbeck came together. Bell would run back to the front, but jumped the start, which allowed Val Stephens to capture the win.
Racing action will continue next Friday when the ASCS Patriot Sprints join the full card, presented by Abtex Corp. A later hot lap session will be offered for late arrivals only. Racing kicks off at 6:45 p.m. For more information, visit www.BlackRockSpeedway.com.
