Christmas in July Makes This Friday at Black Rock Anything But Ordinary
DUNDEE, NY - Winter weather is not completely out of the realm of possibilities this Friday at Black Rock, but one thing is for sure: Santa will still visit the Black Rock Speedway.
Freedom Village USA and Eagle Auto Center will present Samta Claus, who will greet fans of both old and young for his annual mid-summer trip to Dundee. Old St. Nick will bring gifts for all to share with his jolly belly and long gray hair. A good time is guaranteed when Santa is in town, but even if not, there is still some fantastic racing that will be set to get down.
A full card of racing action is on the slate as a fantastic group of seven classes will be on the program this Friday, including the return of the 358-modifieds, pro trucks and regular super stock action. Along with all of that will be a pair of make-up features.
After a week off, the Marbles Automotive 358-modified point battle once again takes focus as five drivers vie for the title. Ron Cartwright was ninth in points just a month ago, but the Portageville, NY driver now finds himself five points ahead of Ray Bliss in the overall standings. Two-time defending Champion Brian Swarthout is only six back of Cartwright. Even though those three are out in front, a Hurricane still looms just off shore, gaining more steam for another invasion Friday. Steve Paine is only 20 points out of the top spot after missing the last two features and will need to be on his A-game to retake the top position down the final stretch of the season. Dave DuBois from Bath, NY is still in the mix in fifth.
After a tough conclusion to the Hoselton Auto Mall Crate Sportsman feature, close friends Brady Fultz and Justin Wright are now closer in points. Fresh off his first Black Rock Sportsman win, Wright is now just eight points back of Dundee’s Fultz. Brady should be in a good spot in the handicap again this week, but will have to fend off other Championship Contenders like Daryl Hilkert and Loren Lincoln.
With Freedom Village USA Sponsoring the night, the Super Stocks, where Freedom Village is the title sponsor, the fans will be treated to a bonus feature as the make-up event from June 8 will be run in conjunction to the regular event Friday.
Fresh off an outstanding performance by the Super Stock regulars last Friday in the BRP Can-Am 360 Late Model feature, the racing returns for double features and plenty of points up for grabs.
Jeremy Wonderling leads the standings by 17 points over Quinn Sutherland, but the last three weeks the Scio, NY driver has ended up trailing Sutherland at the end of the features. Wonderling, the 2006 Champion, will look to return to the hallowed ground at least once this Friday.
Other locals such as Bob Buono, Rich Karlnoski and two-time winner Donnie Smith will contend for a win on the night as the 360 Late Model/ Super Stocks continue to impress.
Rich Sharpsteen I won a thriller in his Street Stock Friday, but it is still Frank Chapman Jr. atop the standings. The Chemung, NY Veteran is 14 points up on Darl Ellis Jr. in the standings, with Jared Hill still in the mix for the Championship.
With the Regional Truck Pro Trucks return after a week off, the question will be if Terry Povoski has cooled off after a hot start to the summer. With a 34-point advantage on Chris Leroux, Povoski is well on his way to a second-straight Truck Championship.
In a unique situation, Derrick Mills leads the Signs Plus of Kanona standings by five points over Del Cummings, but with Mills planning on joining the Navy in Mid-August, it is unlikely that he will contend for the Championship. That leaves Cummings 48 points up on Chris McCann. Another huge field is expected with three-wide racing guaranteed.
While the No. 88a cannot be a Championship car in the adult 4-cylinder class, it is likely to be in the HomeNecessities.com Bandit Division. Rocker Austin leads Dylan Cecee by 35 points, more than can be up in a single feature. David Ahouse captured his first career win last week and will look to repeat seven days later.
Also joining the program on Friday will be the Ladies Street Stock/ Pro Truck event, which was rained out back on June 8. The Ladies will conclude the program with their 10-lap feature for plenty of pride.
