Quinn Sutherland Leads Local Dominance in BRP Can Am Late Models at Black Rock

DUNDEE, NY - When the BRP Can Am 360 Late Models invade the Black Rock Speedway, it is often top-level cars traveling a hefty distance to dominate the action. On Friday Night, the field was just as strong, but the locals came with their guns loaded; especially Quinn Sutherland.

Fresh off of two straight weeks of defeating Jeremy Wonderling in Super Stock action, Dundee’s own Quinn Sutherland dominated the 30-lap, $1,313-to-win feature, taking his first career BRP Can Am 360 Late Model Win.

While the D.B. Miles Insurance Agency/ IBS Builders No. 36 had the field covered through much of the race, late race restarts would put Jeremy Wonderling and Larry Knowles on his rear deck lid. Wonderling would then lean on Sutherland for the final two laps, but could not get by him by the time they hit Scott Hixson’s Double Checkerds.

“We didn’t need the cautions, I’d have been happy staying green, but Jeremy made it interesting,” said the Dundee, NY driver. “I have to thank my dad for convincing me to put a new tire on it, I definitely needed it.”

Sutherland and Wonderling were fortunate enough to redraw front row starting spots, but from the drop of the green flag Larry Knowles was a factor. Just as the winner of the May event was going for the lead, he slid over the banking in turn three and fell out of the top-five. Even after crawling back to third, Knowles discovered that the Black Rock Regulars had stepped up their game, something Sutherland has been striving to do.

“We’ve just been sticking to what we know, we went back to simple stuff,” “To beat these guys feels great, there are a lot of good ones out there and we’ve run at some other tracks with them and they usually give us a pretty good waxing.”

The win for Sutherland was also a sense of satisfaction for the two years he has spent transitioning his super stock into a competitive 360 Late Model. A tough 2006 season has finally been met with a hot summer this year, giving him and the crew plenty of reason to party.

The second place finish for Wonderling, the 2006 Track Champion and 2007 Point Leader was his second-straight brides maid finish in Can Am events at his favorite track.

Knowles’ third place run was solid for most, but for Knowles’ he probably realized that he had the fastest car on the night. Still, it was a solid point night for the Painted Post, NY Driver, who has been looking for such a finish in a few weeks.

Jeff Chesebro continued recent hot streak, winning his heat in dramatic fashion and brining his No. 97 home in fourth. By virtue of Randy Hall getting stuck in the pits after a speeding penalty, he now has the point lead.

Bob Buono from nearby Wayne had his best run in a BRP Can Am Late Model event, as he rounded out the top-five after starting deep in the back. Buono was the capper on a solid showing by the Black Rock contingent.

Brady Fultz and Justin Wright were a full straightaway ahead of the rest of the field in the Hoselton Auto Mall Sportsman Division when Brady Fultz made contact on lap 15 with a lap car and slowed his No. 70, leaving Justin Wright nowhere to go as he spun the leader.

The incidental contact occurred just as the only caution of the event was flying, leaving Wright clean race track to pick up his first career sportsman win at Black Rock. As monumental as it was, “J-Dub” was dejected in Victory Lane.

“I’m still trying to replay it in my mind,” said Wright. “Me and Brady are friends and wanted to pass him cleanly, I saw him check up and I tried to avoid him but obviously I didn’t.”

Mike Entwistle crossed in second with Larry Wight a solid third. Point leader Brady Fultz finished outside the top-10.

Daryl Krebs had won his duel between Rich Sharpsteen I in the Street Stock feature, but a broken tie rod on the final lap in turn four would spin the No. 13 around and open up a drag race to the finish. Even with a flat right rear for the final three laps, Sharpsteen was able to keep his No. 83t pointed in the right direction and beat Larry Fenton by a foot for his third win of the season.

Like Father, Like Son: Rich Sharpsteen II also found his way to Victory Lane in the Signs Plus of Kanona 4-Cylinder Feature. “The Flyin’ X” took the lead on lap eight from Chris McCann on the top side of the track and held off Derrick Mills by a half a car on the final lap to make it another Dundee winner.

Behind those top two was last week’s winner Adam Austin along with Greg Crooker and Del Cummings, who completed the top-five.

David Ahouse captured his first career win in the Bandit division, jumping in front of the field on lap 4 and holding off Kreg Crooker to score the win in only his third night in a new ride. On a night where the division sponsored was also the night sponsor Erica Bell, Dylan Cecee and Rocker Austin rounded out the top-five.

The night of action was also highlighted by a big rig event, presented by John Ferris Trucking. Five semis entered the facility, with Bob Palmer putting his Mack in Victory Lane. Including those trucks, 102 cars were in competition on a night when the 358-modifieds and pro trucks had off. The full racing card is on the docket next Friday, along with a Christmas in July special including Santa Claus.
