Steve Paine Continues Dominance at Black Rock
DUNDEE, NY - The fireworks lit up the sky and flew on the track as the Richard Ganung Mid-Season Championships brought double points and double the excitement to Black Rock Speedway.
Steve Paine won fifth race of the season at Black Rock on Friday night, getting around rookie Trevor Sutherland and Ron Cartwright on lap 16 to lead the final nine laps en route to the win in the Marbles Automotive 358-Modified event.
After finishing in second in his heat, the Waterloo, NY driver moved up from his 10th place starting position to claim third before half way and was easily the class of the field. Even though Sutherland and especially Ron Cartwright Jr. were strong, Paine was the best at the end.
Ron Cartwright was able to cross in second, and despite not winning in Dundee yet this year, he had a major night in the standings with double points on the line.
Trevor Sutherland recorded his best finish in his young modified career with Dave Dubois of Bath and Ray Bliss Jr. completing the top-five.
Mike Mahaney was a pleasant surprise in the Hoselton Auto Mall Crate Sprotsman feature, as he was the winner of the 20-lap event. Mahaney moved around Loren Lincoln on lap eight and pulled away from recent winner Greg Hixson to capture his first checkers in this rookie division.
Lincoln faded to third, with Daryl Hilkert and point leader Brady Fultz rounding out the top five.
Quinn Sutherland was the lone Dundee resident to win on the night as he captured his first Freedom Village USA Super Stock feature of 2007. Sutherland led all 20 laps but had to hold off the face of the series: Jeremy Wonderling, to win the event, something that made the win even more satisfying for the driver of the D.B. Miles Insurance No. 36.
Rich Karlnoski crossed in third for the fifth time this season with Bob Buono and Rob Conkin rounding out a top-five full of locals.
Jared Hill jumped into the lead of the street stock feature but it was Rich Sharpsteen and Frank Chapman who brought their familiar-looking cars to the front of the pack by the end of the feature.
Sharpsteen passed Hill for the lead on lap 8, while Chapman moved around Darl Ellis Jr. to cross in second. Chris Fisher and Jared Hill completed the top-five.
Terry Povoski swept the heat and the feature in the Regional Truck Pro Truck Feature, beating Chris Leroux and Jared Hill.
Derrick Mills picked up his first win of the season in an eventful Signs Plus of Kanona 4-Cylinder feature. Point leader Del Cummings was second with Kim Jennejohn rounding out the podium positions.
Kreg Crooker captured his third win of the season in the HomeNecessities.com Bandit division, leading the final eight laps of the event. Rocker Austin was again solid for second with Dylan Cecee, Josh Sharpsteen and Erica Bell rounding out the top-five.
107 cars were in the pits for the first week back after the scheduled week off. Racing is back on this upcoming Friday as Coryn Farm Supply & Signs present IRL at the Rock with a full slate of racing including all of the regular divisions, plus the 358-modified make-up feature from June 8 and the New York Modified Midgets. Remember that open-wheeled names are likely to be the 600cc micro sprints in a feature to remember.
