Fran Hilton and Jeff Chesebro Back in Victory Lane

Fran Hilton was elated to have his first win of the season, but he figured it was still best if he stayed on the ground in Victory Lane.

Hilton, the veteran from Waterloo picked up the win the Hoselton Automall Sportsman at Black Rock in convincing fashion, keeping a quality distance over Randy McCulloch and picking his way through lapped traffic in a near caution-free event.

Hilton, who also had a win around this point last season, noted after the event that the competition level of the division at BRS has gotten much tougher in 2010, making this win much more gratifying.

The only caution of the event came on the opening circuit for Donnie Lawson who would pull into the pits and not return.

McCulloch hung on for his third runner-up of the season with Rob Richmond Jr. in third.
John Juhl and Ron Cartwright Jr. rounded out the top-five.

In the second leg of the Dart Machinery BRS/Canandaigua Late Model Challenge for the Insinger Race Fuels division, outsider Jeff Chesebro took a lightly-prepared car and took it to Victory Lane.

Chesebro, from Smethport, PA, took the lead from local Rich Karlnoski on the fifth circuit and held off a hard-charging Mikey Wonderling for his first win in Yates County since 2005.

In the late stages, Wonderling began to peak underneath Chesebro, and set up a bonsai run in the final corners, but when the leader ran the inside, Wonderling spun around and allowed Chesebro to check out.

The driver that won his first ever BRP CanAm Feature at BRS said in Victory Lane that he had not even touched the car other than to wash it since competing at Little Valley Speedway.

In what might be the best feature of the season to this point, four elite American Racer Tire Street Stocks put on a show swapping the lead in the late stages of the 20-lap feature.

Jared Hill jumped out in front early from the pole position but would see both Bob Buono and Chris Fisher move in front before Hill took it back with just four laps remaining. Along with Andy Fisk, this foursome raced cleanly and used various lines to settle the issue of the win.

Terry Povoski not only scored another Signs Plus of Kanona 4-Cylinder Feature win, he took the lead by lap three. After a multitude of early-race restarts, the race finally had a green flag look and when it did, Povoski was long gone, winning by a comfortable margain.

Rich Sharpsteen II was second, with Scott Bradley third. Ray Speicher and Del Cummings completed the top-five.

The No. 4 4-cylinder swept the night as Cody Clemens picked up his first career Home Necessites Bandit Feature Win. Becoming the fourth different winner of the youth division this year, Clemens waited until Zach Teed drifted high in turn four coming to the two-to-go signal. Teed and Noah Herington rounded out the podium.

A fine crowd was on hand on a beautiful night for a great night of action, which included perhaps the most impressive show in BRS history. Over 90 cars were in the pit area which was a season-high on a “standard” night.

Black Rock will be off next week for graduation, racing will resume on July 2. For more information, visit www.BlackRockSpeedway.com.
